Optimizing Lipid Production by planktonic Algae - LIPIDO
This project is one of the five N-INNER projects that has received funding when N-INNER launched a call for research proposals 1 March 2007. N-INNER, the Northern European Innovative Energy Research Programme, is a joint programme between the Academy of Finland, the Research Council of Norway, the Swedish Energy Agency, the Danish Council for Strategic Research, Projektträger Jülich, Orkustofnun and Nordic Energy Research. Read more about N-INNER under the European Research Area.
Background EU targets are that 10% of the fuel consumed by 2010 should come from biocomponents. In producing biomass fuels, it is important to compare production alternatives for various primary sources. In this project the researchers aim at optimizing algal culturing as a source for biodiesel production, as algae have several advantages to land based biomass. Algae reproduce several times a day, their lipid content is higher than that of terrestrial plants, algal production does not compete for feriea land with food production
Project goal
- Screening the most promising algal species for temperate environments
- Optimizing their growth and lipid yield as functions of growth condition
- Testing the practical applicability of coupling algal culturing to CO2 emission mitigation
- Screening commercially interesting by-products from biomass of selected species
