At the Nordic Council of Ministers for Energy 25 October 2010 the common Nordic electricity market was one of the key items on the agenda. The Nordic ministers discussed the follow up of the “Action plan for a borderless electricity market” and the future developments of the market.
The Ministers underlined the importance of keeping up the good work in harmonising the Nordic electricity market – also at the end user level. The ambition was also stated by the Prime Ministers in their meeting in Reykjavik on the 2nd of November.
In their meeting the prime ministers stated that: “A joint electricity market, integrating a range of production systems – e.g. thermal power, nuclear power and hydroelectricity – with renewable energy would generate major Nordic synergies. The major increase in the proportion of renewables in the Nordic market throws up multiple challenges and underlines the value of co-operation and integration. The development of “smart grids” in the Region will help promote efficiency and guarantee electricity supplies with a high proportion of renewable energy sources.”
The Nordic Electricity Market Group provided the ministers with background information and proposals. Nordic Energy Research has the secretariat for the group.
One of the key results from the meeting is that the Nordic energy ministers continue to place high emphasis on the development of a common Nordic end user market. The Nordic regulatory agencies for the electricity market have provided the Nordic ministers with an implementation plan for the development of the end user market. The regulators aim at implementing the necessary changes by 2015. A common Nordic end user market will be first international end user market for electricity in the world.
