Transportation is vital for upholding high welfare and integration of the Nordic countries. It enables travel by land, sea, and air and fosters economic growth and nurtures personal connections across the Nordic countries as well as within and between urban and rural areas.

However, we need to make our transport practices more sustainable. The transport sector accounts for a quarter of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions, according to the European Environment Agency. In addition, the transportation need is predicted to increase in the future. Without an accelerated and comprehensive green transition of the transportation sector, this undermines the Nordics’ ambitious climate objectives of carbon neutrality as well as the Nordic vision of becoming the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030.

A comprehensive transition of the transport sector requires Nordic cooperation, due to our deeply connected transport infrastructures, and it should explore both modal shift, behaviour changes, as well as sustainable technologies and fuels.

Sustainable transportation through Nordic cooperation

“The Nordic Green Transport Forum will reveal Nordic sustainable initiatives for making the Nordic region the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030 through green transport and mobility,” says Klaus Skytte, CEO of Nordic Energy Research.

The forum has a twofold aim:

  1. To uncover innovative solutions and possible paths forward to achieve sustainable Nordic transportation on land, at sea, and in the air.
  2. To discover the added value of cooperation across the Nordic countries and sectors to meet national climate goals and the Nordic Vision 2030 – that the Nordic region should become the world’s most sustainable and integrated region by 2030.

One of the Nordic Council of Minister’s prioritisation areas under Sweden’s presidency in 2024 is green mobility. Hence, Nordic politicians are invited on stage to discuss crucial issues on green transportation at the forum. Additionally, the European Environment Agency will give a status on green transportation in the EU, and Nordic keynote speakers will present their technical and innovative solutions on sustainable transportation. Among the Nordic keynote speakers, project leaders of five funded projects under the programme, Green Transition of the Transport Sector, will be present.

Background

On behalf of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Nordic Energy Research is hosting the Nordic Green Transport Forum on May 7, at Clarion Hotel Post in Gothenburg. The forum is open to the public, aimed towards stakeholders dealing with transportation.

In 2020, the Ministers of Co-operation (MR-SAM) recognised the need and advantages of strengthening Nordic cross-sectoral collaboration on the green transition of the transport sector. This led to the establishment of the programme, Green Transition of the Transport Sector, and five financed Nordic projects investigating innovative solutions and how Nordic cooperation can accelerate the green transition.
