Nordic Energy Research and Nordic financiers are funding the Nordic Energy Outlooks – Nordic energy system research Programme (NEOs) to create a forum for collaboration between different groups and institutions researching Nordic energy systems.
The Programme will add Nordic and national value by facilitating synthesis of current national research results and benchmarking these on a regional level. Due to the degree of interconnectedness, some topics, – e.g. electricity markets – are best analyzed at a regional level.
Bringing together national research group with specific knowledge of sub-sectors in the field to investigate similar research questions would give additional insights into how methodology, models and assumptions influence results.
The aim of Nordic Energy Outlooks – The Nordic Energy System Research Programme (NEOs) is to:
“Strengthen Nordic research competencies and collaboration between different groups and institutions researching Nordic energy systems by building on existing national research programs”.
Applying for the call
Nordic Energy Research is currently accepting applications to the call for this programme.
Any Research Performing Organisations (RPO) with expertise in energy system modelling and that is based in the Nordic region is welcome to apply. It is possible to apply as an individual organisation or as a consortium of organisations from the same country, if this is better suited to ongoing modelling activities.
Timeline
- (September 2021 – February 2022) Bioenergy and links to agriculture & LULUCF in a Nordic context
- (February 2022 – August 2022) Increased electrification – new electricity generators and consumers
- (August 2022 – February 2023) Energy efficiency and conservation in a Nordic perspective
- (February 2023 – August 2023) Fossil free and resource efficient transport and transport infrastructure
Background and previous work
The Nordic countries have a strong tradition in analyzing energy systems and energy modelling. Today, international forums facilitate collaboration amongst subsets of modelling groups, but often without a Nordic focus (such as the IEA ETSAP group for TIMES modelling). Current Nordic and European projects include subsets of research groups from Nordic countries, but do not have comparative modelling within their scope (such as the Nordic Clean Energy Scenarios project.
Nordic Energy Research has previously funded projects to promote collaboration between different groups and institutions researching Nordic energy systems – e.g. Nordic Energy Technology Perspectives 2013 and 2016
To continue previous collaborations and strengthen Nordic research in energy systems the Board of Nordic Energy Research initiated the Nordic Energy Outlooks – Nordic energy system research Programme (NEOs) in 2018.
December 2020 a Memorandum of Understanding to finance the programme was signed by Nordic Energy Research, The Research Council of Norway, The Danish Energy Agency and The Swedish Energy Agency.
