Nordic Energy Research is offering support for Nordic or Nordic-Baltic PhD and researcher mobility in the following key areas: digitization, development of the electricity market, energy storage, transport, bioenergy and CCUS.
A total of NOK 12,7 million is available for this programme. Of this, NOK 2.7 million is reserved for partners in Nordic-Baltic projects.
The aims and objectives of the PhD and researcher mobility projects are:
- to develop, facilitate and create a more concrete framework for collaboration and co-operation between higher education institutions, research institutions and industry in the Nordic and Nordic-Baltic regions
- to offer support to PhD and research projects in the key areas: digitization, development of the electricity market, energy storage, transport, bioenergy and CCUS
- to help students and researchers to create useful networks.
Funded project: Nordic-Baltic Co-Simulation Platform Towards Increasing the Stability of AC/DC Transmission Grids
Nordic-Baltic Co-Simulation Platform Towards Increasing the Stability of AC/DC Transmission Grids (COSPACT) gathers six Nordic and Baltic universities that are involved in power system research. As the Nordic-Baltic power systems are moving towards extensive allocation of non-synchronously connected renewable generation, the consortium has seen a need to develop, facilitate and create a framework for collaboration and cooperation within the field. The objective of this project is to form a Nordic-Baltic cooperation and simulation platform for information exchange and system analysis and provide mobility support for students and researchers to increase the knowledge on future power system development and control. Some of the topics covered in the project are transmission system expansion planning, flexible operation of grid-connected microgrids using energy storage option, wide-area control and protection possibilities and integration of wind energy.
Project Manager: Jako Kilter, Associate professor at Tallinn University of Technology
Funded Project: Establishment of Nordic-Baltic PhD and researcher mobility network in the field of the bioenergy
Establishment of Nordic-Baltic PhD and Researcher Mobility Network in the Field of the Bioenergy (ReMoNet) aims to create an internationally recognized Nordic-Baltic bioenergy network for PhD students and researchers. The project will support research and innovations in the efficient use of renewable energy sources, reduction of environmental pollution, and implementation of new inventions in the bioenergy sector. Ongoing research includes reductions of pollutants in the combustion of biomass as well as integration of energy storage systems in various production processes.
Project Manager: Linas Paukštaitis, Lecturer at Kaunas University of Technology
Funded Project: The Material Technologies for Post-Combustion CO2 Capture and Utilization Network
The Material Technologies for Post-Combustion CO2 Capture and Utilization Network (CCU-net) will create a strong academic network between four leading Nordic research groups with the aim to strengthen the interdisciplinary mobility for training of highly qualified researchers and create the basis for a strong “CCU-Nordic network”. The program will support and train outstanding researchers working on CCU by advancing their skills in science, engineering, and social competence. These scientists shall evolve experts and leaders in academia, industry, and government to navigate and lead future developments in CCU.
Project manager: Andreas Kaiser, Associate Professor at Technical University of Denmark
Funded Project: The Nordic Flow Battery Network
The Nordic Flow Battery Network (NordicRFB) promotes collaboration and coordination of flow battery research in the Nordic region through mobility and networking grants to PhD students and researchers. The NordicRFB will raise the awareness of research activities carried out by the various partners within the consortium by sharing and discussing the best practices and methods for testing and evaluating materials, cells, and stacks with feedback from external stakeholders. The project will also promote collaboration in the form of joint and individual projects, funded either by national or international sources.
Project Manager: Pekka Peljo, Associate Professor at University of Turku
Funded Project: The Nordic Fire and Safety Network Focus on Energy
The Nordic Fire and Safety Network Focus on Energy (NFSNergy) is a consortium consisting of the major Nordic universities and research institutes dealing with fire safety and risk management. The project will increase the networking and exchange of PhD students and researchers within the field of safety of buildings and energy infrastructures. The project will also bring together multidisciplinary teams working on important energy-related initiatives, for example through summer schools and the Nordic Fire and Safety Days (NFSD), a conference which has run annually since 2019 and will be running biannually henceforth.
Background and previous call
The Nordic or Nordic-Baltic PhD- and Researcher Mobility Programme was initiated in 2018, at the request of the Nordic energy ministers and the suggestion of Jorma Olilla.
With this programme, Nordic Energy Research hope to concretize the collaboration in energy research between universities and institutions in Nordic and Nordic-Baltic regions through mobility and networking grants.
The programme was further developed, and in September 2019, the Board of Nordic Energy Research effectuated the programme.
Ahead of this, the Programme Board of the Joint Baltic-Nordic Energy Research Programme (JBNERP) had decided to combine the initiatives under action 2 (A Baltic-Nordic Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) collaboration) & 3 (Exchange of energy researchers between the Baltic and Nordic countries) into this common Nordic programme.
