PRESS RELEASE: A new report commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers and Nordic Energy Research warns that the Nordic energy system is vulnerable to cyberattacks, sabotage and disruptions to critical infrastructure. The report sets out 25 recommendations on how the Nordic countries can strengthen energy security through closer cooperation.
– The Nordic region benefits from robust energy systems and a long tradition of cooperation built on trust. We now need to take the next step in strengthening our shared energy security. Enhanced energy cooperation will bolster both our resilience and the green transition, says Karen Ellemann, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers.
The report was prepared by the Economic Security Forum on behalf of the Nordic Council of Ministers and Nordic Energy Research. It highlights, in particular, the need for better protection of critical energy infrastructure, more secure supply chains and improved access to critical components.
Among its recommendations, the report proposes that the Nordic countries should:
- develop a common strategic approach to energy security
- strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure
- improve coordination regarding the connection of major new electricity consumers
- enhance preparedness and stockpiling of critical components
- increase the strategic focus on the Arctic and the North Atlantic
At the same time, electricity demand is expected to rise sharply in the coming years as industries undergo transformation and new energy-intensive businesses are established across the Nordic region. Continued expansion of renewable and fossil-free energy generation is identified as essential to the region’s long-term resilience.
The report also emphasises the need for closer Nordic cooperation to address future crises and security threats.
– The Nordic countries are closely interconnected and dependent on each other’s energy systems. Together we stand strong, but we need to improve our ability to handle threats and crises jointly in order to become even stronger, says Klaus Skytte, Chief Executive Officer of Nordic Energy Research.
